My Perspective: The difference in energy levels and how you feel at the end of a day is directly proportional to the amount of time you spend in pursuing your goals (they could be personal or professional).
If the majority of your day is just spent in addressing crisis situation, adhoc activities and fulfilling other’s priorities, then at the end of the day you are bound to feel low and your day appears to have been wasted.
Lets now look at this Week’s Question
Question – How can I schedule my day, so I feel productive and in control at the end of the day?
Answer –
Let me elaborate on this beautiful quote by Jim Rohn.
If you want your day to be productive, it is important to have it planned well ahead of time. So you need to know your objectives and outcomes for the day, all documented on paper before even you get started!
Implement the following steps to schedule your day to make it productive.
1. Before you end your “TODAY”, have your OUTCOMES for “TOMORROW”.
2. Each of your OUTCOMES for “TOMORROW” has to be aligned with the OUTCOMES for the week.
3. Each OUTCOME should take you closer to your GOAL in that area of your life.
4. Think of tasks that you need to do to generate that OUTCOME. These tasks then enter your to-do list for the day.
5. Apply Pareto’s principal – Each of your task should be part of the 20% that creates 80% of your results. Hence before executing a task – ask yourself – “Is this part of my 20%”?
That’s it! You are all set to have an awesome productive day!
The challenge that most of us face is that we always think in terms of to-do lists and not OUTCOMES. This simple change can have a massive impact on your productivity and fulfilment.
So let’s implement the above process for one of the possible goals.
Long term Goal – Improve Team Morale
The OUTCOME for the Week (Decided on Sunday evening) – Understand the challenges the team has been facing in recent times
Sample Tasks for Monday –
1. Talk to 3 of the team members and understand their challenges
2. Create an action plan to address their challenges
3. Talk to your boss to discuss the issues
So on……
As detailed above, each day of the week should have some tasks that will take you closer to the goal of improving team morale. The next Sunday, you need to sit and evaluate if you are closer to the goal than last week and then if there is a need to continue working on it.
This is an extremely effective method and will surely make you better in managing your days and weeks.
Experiment with it and let me know your thoughts and feedback on the above process.
