The topic that we are discussing these days is “Self-Discipline – A Miracle or A Practice !!!!”
Question – What’s the impact of not being Self-Disciplined? Does it really matter?
Answer – In a discussion with one of my clients a few days back – we were talking about setting a breakthrough goal and creating a plan to start working towards that.
We did the detailing, created the plan and then I asked my client if she was ready to start working towards that goal in a consistent manner. To which she appeared doubtful and upon further discussion, I figured out that the single most reason of her self-doubt was her underlying belief that she was not disciplined enough to stay consistent with any of her past projects/ goals, and hence she was not sure on this one too!
She had given up on setting breakthrough goals a long time back and giving a commitment to be consistent on this goal was a big ask from her.
She had resigned to a life of mediocrity and not delivering to her full potential. Isn’t that sad?
So, as with my client, inconsistency in putting efforts and taking action is the single most reason why people give up on themselves and their goals so easily. It’s easy to justify not starting than justifying why one leaves something midway, isn’t it?
Although a lot of us choose to be comfortable and take the path of least resistance, lack of Self Discipline constantly troubles us and could have some serious ramifications. A few visible consequences that emerge due to this are –
- Low self-esteem and low self-worth
- Underlying frustration of not being able to stick to commitments and timelines
- Always in a catching-up mode
- Missed opportunities
- Stagnancy and complacency
- Life of mediocrity
- Resorting to excuses/ justifications
- Blame game
