Question – What one thing could help accelerate my journey to Self-Discipline?
Answer – If you are really struggling to get disciplined in any specific area, and would desperately want to get it fixed NOW, then I would recommend the following. This is exactly what worked for me.
Usually, I go to attend my exercising classes thrice a week where I am amongst a bunch of enthusiastic people who are working towards similar goals. Since the money is invested and there is a specific time, I manage my schedule to go for it!
Last month, I had to take time off from these classes due to some unavoidable reasons and I decided to carve off time during the day to compensate for the miss and in fact try some new routines. I was very sure at the beginning of the month that I would be committed and disciplined to get some form of exercise every day.
However, unfortunately, I hardly ever was able to get out of my house as I always had something more urgent to do!
Sad, isn’t it!!!
To avoid a similar pattern this month, well I re-joined the classes to ensure that I get the push to go out and be regular with my exercising routine with the people who are working towards similar goals!
Can you see what this means?
So, what steps can you take to get disciplined in a specific area of your life where you have been struggling till date –
1. Create an intention to get better in the area you want to work in. Without a definite intention, it will not happen. It shouldn’t be a “good to have”, rather a “MUST HAVE”!
E.g. when the doctor says you have another 2 months to get better or else, we will have to start giving daily injections, your will power suddenly springs up and you will do whatever it takes in the next two months to avoid the pain of daily injections!
We wait until CRISIS to start taking action – this awareness to avoid the crisis to be proactive to address your challenge is the first step to bring in the change!
2. Be in the company of people who are working towards similar goals! It is said that “You are an average of the five people you spend your time with!”, so find the right company.
For Example, if you want to get fitter, surround yourself with people, routines, information that drives you and pushes you to work harder towards your goals.
3. Make a Commitment with money & time. Force yourself in ways that you can’t then withdraw from the commitment. E.g. you could commit to your team about a certain goal and set up a meeting to share your progress well ahead of time or have a trainer come to your doorstep thrice a week at 6:00 am or join some class with a bunch of enthusiasts at 6:00 am or something similar. I think you get the point.
Then organize all the other areas of your life around this commitment.
4. Broadcast your goal to a large audience with a timeline i.e. broadcast your intention. This ensures that you keep working to keep your word. Don’t be afraid of failing or let your mind fool you with “What If” questions, just go out there and do it!
5. Work with a Coach who can help you stay on track by asking questions, sending reminders, helping you create plans, discover your strengths and help address your challenges. This works wonders, I know it since I work with multiple Coaches for different goals of my life.
Remember:
1. The path to your goal is as important as achieving your milestone! So, enjoy the journey.
2. It is normal to feel discouraged on the way, don’t lose heart. Make sure that you don’t give up but bounce back after the intermediate short break.
3. Since you are comfortable and familiar in your current zone (although you know it’s not good for you), there’s bound to be inner resistance to work on your new goals since that’s unfamiliar territory. Be aware to identify that resistance. Overcoming that inner resistance is the key to daily progress.
